Pre-Season Engine Checks for Motorhome Base Vehicles
Essential pre-season engine checks for Fiat Ducato, Ford Transit, and Volkswagen Crafter-based motorhomes, including fluids, belts, and filters.
What This Is
Most motorhomes are built on commercial vehicle base chassis. This guide covers the owner-level engine checks that should be carried out at the start of each season.
Tools & Parts Required
- Engine oil (correct grade for your vehicle)
- Coolant (correct type)
- Screenwash
- Brake fluid
- Torch
- Clean cloth
Step-by-Step Instructions
- 1
With the engine cold and the vehicle on level ground, remove the dipstick, wipe clean, reinsert fully, and withdraw. The oil level should be between MIN and MAX. Top up with the correct grade oil (most Fiat Ducato 2.3 MultiJet engines use 5W-30 ACEA C3). Never overfill.
- 2
Check the coolant expansion tank — the level should be between MIN and MAX when cold. Top up with the correct coolant type (most modern engines use OAT or HOAT coolant; do not mix types). If the level drops repeatedly, have the cooling system pressure-tested for leaks.
- 3
Check the brake fluid reservoir on the bulkhead. The level should be between MIN and MAX. If the fluid is dark brown, it should be replaced. Brake fluid should be replaced every 2 years regardless of level.
- 4
Visually inspect the auxiliary drive belt (serpentine belt) for cracks, fraying, or glazing. A cracked belt should be replaced immediately — belt failure leaves you stranded and can cause engine damage.
- 5
Remove the air filter and hold it up to the light. If you cannot see light through the filter element, replace it. A blocked air filter increases fuel consumption and reduces performance. Replace every 20,000 miles or 2 years.
- 6
Fill the washer reservoir with a screenwash solution at the correct dilution for the expected temperature. Plain water is illegal in the UK and freezes in winter. Test the washers and wipers — replace wiper blades if they streak or skip.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Using the wrong oil grade — always check the handbook, not just the oil filler cap
- Mixing coolant types — OAT and HOAT coolants are not compatible and the mixture can cause corrosion
- Ignoring a repeatedly dropping coolant level — this indicates a leak that will worsen
Safety Warnings
- Never open the coolant cap when the engine is hot — risk of severe scalding.
When to Call a Professional
Timing belt replacement is a critical service item — consult the vehicle handbook for the interval. Fiat Ducato 2.3 MultiJet: every 5 years or 120,000 miles. Have it done by a qualified mechanic.
