Satellite Dish: Installation, Alignment & Signal Troubleshooting
How to install a portable or roof-mounted satellite dish, align it to Astra 2 for Freesat, and diagnose common signal problems.
What This Is
A satellite dish gives you access to all UK Freesat channels wherever you are parked in the UK and much of Europe. This guide covers setup and alignment from scratch.
Tools & Parts Required
- Satellite finder meter
- Compass
- Inclinometer app (smartphone)
- Coax cable and F-connectors
- Coax crimping tool
- Satellite receiver or TV with built-in tuner
Step-by-Step Instructions
- 1
UK Freesat and Sky channels broadcast from Astra 2 at 28.2° East. From the UK, the dish must point south-southeast at an elevation of approximately 28° (southern England) to 20° (northern Scotland). The azimuth is approximately 145°. Use the Dishpointer app for precise values at your location.
- 2
For a portable dish, position it on level ground with a clear view to the south-southeast. Ensure no obstructions block the line of sight to the satellite.
- 3
Set the dish elevation using the scale on the dish mount. Point the dish toward the calculated azimuth bearing using a compass. Note that magnetic declination in the UK is approximately 2° west — add this to your compass bearing.
- 4
Connect a satellite finder meter between the LNB and the receiver coax cable. Power up the receiver. Slowly sweep the dish left and right around the target azimuth while watching the signal meter. When you find a signal peak, fine-tune the elevation for maximum signal.
- 5
Verify you are on the correct satellite by checking that the receiver finds UK channels (BBC, ITV, etc.). Astra 1 (19.2°E) carries German channels; Hotbird (13°E) carries Italian and French channels.
- 6
Once signal is confirmed on Astra 2, run a full channel scan on your receiver. For Freesat receivers, select 'Freesat' scan. The scan should find 200+ UK channels.
- 7
If signal quality is below 60%: check for obstructions, verify dish pointing, check all coax connections. 'No signal' despite correct pointing: check LNB connections, test with a known-good cable. Intermittent signal: check coax connectors for moisture ingress — use weatherproof F-connectors.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Locking onto the wrong satellite — always verify by checking for UK channels
- Moisture in coax connectors — use weatherproof F-connectors and self-amalgamating tape on outdoor connections
- Forgetting that trees and buildings block satellite signals even if they appear to be 'to the side'
When to Call a Professional
Automatic satellite systems (Oyster, Maxview Omnisat) require specialist alignment and software configuration — contact the manufacturer's service network.
