Spring Recommissioning Checklist

A thorough checklist for bringing your motorhome back into service after winter storage.

2–3 hoursEasy

What This Is

After winter storage, a systematic recommissioning check ensures everything is safe and working before your first trip of the season. Skipping this step is the most common cause of breakdowns and problems on early-season trips.

Tools & Parts Required

  • Multimeter
  • Tyre pressure gauge
  • Damp meter
  • Torch

Step-by-Step Instructions

  1. 1

WATER SYSTEM: Sanitise and refill the water system. See the De-Winterising Water System guide for full details.

  2. 2

BATTERY: Check the leisure battery voltage. If it has been on a maintainer, it should be at 12.6V+. If not, charge fully before use.

  3. 3

GAS: Check the gas hose and regulator for any deterioration over winter. Connect a fresh bottle and leak-test all connections with soapy water.

  4. 4

TYRES: Check pressures on all tyres including the spare. Inspect for flat spots, cracking, or damage.

  5. 5

DAMP CHECK: Use a damp meter to check all interior walls, floor edges, and around windows. Address any readings above 15% before the season starts.

  6. 6

EXTERIOR SEALS: Inspect all external sealant joints for cracks or gaps. Reseal any that have deteriorated.

  7. 7

TEST ALL SYSTEMS: Run the heater, hot water, fridge, all lights, water pump, and habitation electrics. Check the 240V system on hook-up.

  8. 8

HABITATION CHECK: If your habitation check is due (recommended annually), book it now before the busy season.

  9. 9

VEHICLE SERVICE: Check engine oil, coolant, screen wash, and brake fluid. Check the vehicle service schedule.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Skipping the recommissioning check and heading straight out on a trip.
  • Forgetting to remove rodent repellent sachets from inside the vehicle.
  • Not checking the habitation check date.

Safety Warnings

  • Do not use the gas system until you have checked for leaks.
  • Do not drive until you have checked tyre pressures.

When to Call a Professional

If any system fails to operate correctly during recommissioning, have it assessed before your first trip. A breakdown on the road is far more inconvenient and expensive than a pre-season service.
