Winterising Your Water System

Protect your motorhome's water system from frost damage with this complete winterisation procedure.

45–60 minutesEasy

What This Is

Water left in pipes, tanks, and the pump can freeze and cause expensive damage in temperatures below 0°C. Proper winterisation takes less than an hour and can save you hundreds of pounds in repairs.

Tools & Parts Required

  • Compressed air or a 12V tyre inflator with blow-gun attachment
  • Food-grade antifreeze (optional — UK winters rarely require this)
  • Towels
  • Torch

Step-by-Step Instructions

  1. 1

Empty the fresh water tank completely. Open the drain tap at the lowest point of the tank, or use the pump to empty it through the taps.

  2. 2

Open all taps — hot and cold — and leave them open. This allows air to circulate and prevents pressure build-up if any residual water freezes.

  3. 3

Switch on the water pump and allow it to run until it stops drawing water. Switch it off immediately once it runs dry to prevent pump damage.

  4. 4

If you have a blown-air system, use compressed air to blow out the pipes. Connect to the inlet and blow through each tap in turn.

  5. 5

Drain the hot water boiler. There is usually a drain valve or plug at the bottom of the boiler. Allow it to drain fully — this is the most important step.

  6. 6

Drain the shower tray and waste pipes. Pour a small amount of non-toxic antifreeze into the shower trap and toilet cassette to prevent the traps from freezing.

  7. 7

Remove and store the water filter cartridge. Leaving a wet filter in a freezing environment will damage it.

  8. 8

Leave all taps in the open position during storage. Place a note on the control panel reminding you to fill the tank and close taps before use.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Forgetting to drain the hot water boiler — this is the most expensive component to replace.
  • Leaving the pump running dry for too long.
  • Not draining the shower trap — a frozen trap can crack the shower tray.

Safety Warnings

  • If using antifreeze, ensure it is food-grade and non-toxic. Flush the entire system thoroughly before use in spring.
  • Never use automotive antifreeze in a drinking water system — it is highly toxic.

When to Call a Professional

If you discover a burst pipe or cracked fitting after a freeze, a plumber or motorhome technician should assess the full extent of the damage before you re-pressurise the system.
